What do you think of this practice of super-dramatizing a photo? I want to avoid a discussion of the "veracity" of photography, but apart from the potential use of the photo for advertising or other commercial purposes, why manipulate a photograph so that it not longer represents anything close to the scene that was actually captured?

That's interesting and maybe a debate between art and journalism?
For me personally, what's possible in post is just as interesting (if not more) then capturing a technically accurate photo.
A pretty picture is just that. The only time I would not agree is in journalism where the photo is expected to represent what was actually witnessed.
