After a full season lockout, the National Hockey League is back in business but not without changing some rules, a new collective bargaining agreement and an updated look including changes to the historical black and orange shield.
Invigorated NHL Shield -- The League's updated mark uses upward-reading letters to project a vibrant, optimistic image, yet defers to tradition by maintaining the time-honored shape of the original shield. The updated logo's dominant color is silver, in homage to the most cherished trophy in sports, the sterling silver Stanley Cup.

I'm not sure how I feel about that.. stand alone, it's a great logo.. but the orange, the orange..

Ice is silver...it isn't orange! While I greatly appreciate the old logo and all the memories, now is a new time for the NHL and this logo is super.

Well, the orange is cool, the silver is cool, but, the "upward optimism" they were talking about in the upward "NHL" in the middle, I don't like it, just change the colour and make it look good, they goofed with that, since the N is near the bottom it feels less powerfull, less dominant.. but... to each their own. As a graphic artist... I have to edit everything I don't like cause too many people goof up. This will be one of the goof ups I'll have to sadly edit. Nice try though, nice colour, but goofed with changing it too much, oh well, OHL hockey is better anyways. :-P

definitely screwed up with the upward lettering. smakd is right - it feels less powerful, and as we read up to down it is just plain awkward. when i first saw it on a personal website i thought it was a mistake. after i saw it at nhl.com and thought maybe it was an attempt, like a lot of canadian brand name logos, to combine the french (lhn) and the english names.
colours definitely work though. i like the beefed up 3D depth of it too.

i agree with chris and smakd.... the colors are okay but the lettering is really screwed.
