During a time when efforts are high to battle piracy, it's a shame that when we do spend $30 on a movie, we are now forced to watch previews of other movies first with no option to skip other then fast forward.
This being even more annoying then many terrible menu screens, having no previews was one of my favorite changes from VHS to DVD. Don't take that away from me and put the previews on a sub-menu where they belong.

I quite agree. On the Shrek 2 DVD (UK) there was almost 10 minutes of unskippable advertising - one was a trailer for Shark Tale and then a small featurette on Madagascar which was still in production at the time. Only then could I get to the main menu to watch the film. It's terrible.

It really is quite invasive. With the new DRM systems on the way from Microsoft, Apple and the like, I wouldn't predict an end to it, either. You'll be able to watch a movie between the hours of 5pm and 8pm, in the living room only, but not after you've used the washroom and only if there are 3 people or less in the room.
On another note, did you know that tools like DVDShrink (http://www.dvdshrink.org/) allow you to selectively remove such nonsense? For your own personal backups, of course. I mean, you did pay the Canadian levy for that burner and those discs, right?

Neil: Shrek 2 was what initiated this post. That preview/interview was one of the worst.

You know, I started to notice this too and I really hate it.. I liked that DVDs had no previews, or what few did, had them on a menu option you could choose to watch or not...
we all have tv shows like Access Hollywood or whatever shouting upcoming movies at us 24/7 anyway.. it's not like we're seeing something great for the first time on these DVDs anyway
