Now that Google Maps is capable of displaying detailed satellite images of the globe, I questioned the value of Keyhole and the price some of us paid to use it. Especially since Google Maps has a much better coverage area.
Google Maps vs Keyhole
Reply from Google:
Hello Stephen,
Thank you for your inquiry. We do realize, for a short time, some of the imagery on Maps is actually more current than the imagery in Keyhole. We are working double-time to complete a new, better, more current Keyhole 3D database that will be available to all Keyhole customers by the end of April.
While we have merged a few of the Keyhole capabilities to enhance Google Maps, we still have many features only available to Keyhole customers:
- Higher-level of interactivity with the ability to tilt and rotate
- Ability to zoom fluidly to a location
- Higher resolution data (Google Maps resolution is restricted due to web browser limitations)
- 3D interactivity
- Overlay capabilities
- Measuring tools
- Sharing and saving "Placemarks"
- Additional enhancements coming soon that will make Keyhole even more useful.
I hope I have clarified the benefits of using the technology and features available to a subscriber of Keyhole.
Please continue to enjoy Keyhole, and let us know if we can assist you further.
