I picked up my copy this morning at the post office and now I'm just finishing this great book full of beautiful full page color illustrations.
With no projected finish date for the 24 minute short film, Brian Taylor does a great job with this book to anticipate the final product of Rustboy.
There are 2 main things that fascinates me the most and draws me to this book, #1 A love for computer animation and #2 showing how a simple hobby can gain popularity and success with a little dedication.
The book is full of story boards, concept paintings, 3D images, sketches and comparisons of before and after texture rendering. Without giving the complete story away, you are given a better understanding on what the film story will be like and some details in Rustboys adventure.
This is not a technical book but there are sections explaining Brian's concepts, techniques and critical decisions needed to accomplish a great product. A nice addition
I now anticipate this DVD even more about the story of this Frankenstein/Pinocchio character. I may even end up with a few more things.
A few quotes from the book that stuck with me:
"I'll make a little movie about this Rustboy fellow,' can turn into an incredibly complicated obsession. And the deeper you go the more there is to learn and the bigger the task becomes." p11.
"This appears to be the curse of most creative people - starting a project, only to abandon it at an early stage in favour of a 'better' idea that occurs to you along the way" p15.
"but I've come this far and there's no turning back now." p26

Cool article. The book looks amazing - you just inspired me to order it. I'm in Canada and the total cost of the book with shipping is $80 USD. A few bucks - but this money goes right to Brian to help fund the project - so it's well worth it!
Yay Rustboy!
