Despite what I have been told in the past I have always used a text editor over a useless WYSIWYG editor for development. From my first site in notepad and homesite 1.0 at College to my more recent with a later version of HomeSite
I started reading a new book I got for Christmas and the first chapter had a number of good points on this topic and then today I found this great thread that capitalized on the topic as well.
I have tried FrontPage, DreamWeaver, WebSphere and a few others and never lasted longer then a few hours in any of them. I can't handle not having full control over what goes into the source.
Highlights From Thread:
"I was a FrontPage junky. I quickly lost what little knowledge of HTML I had and became dependant on FrontPage. When it came time to learn ColdFusion, I found that my lack of HTML knowledge was a hindrance. I dumped FrontPage and forced myself to learn HTML all over again."
"However, if you are serious about scripting, then you'll know from experience how WYSIWYG editors screw around with your beautiful code."
"I began writing in FrontPage, but very quickly grew tired of the proprietary code, the server extensions, and once I moved to ASP, i grew tired of it trying to change my code."
A comment that makes me wonder:
"once I was in the 'professional' world, I was introduced to Dreamweaver. We design sites for photographers and 'pump out' at least 2 sites a day for the clients to proof"
