MousePlanet is not associated with the Walt Disney Company but their article goes on to say that traditional 2D animation could possibly be history.
I've been a huge fan of Disney's work and I'm also the type that will go to a movie just to see the 3D animation but I don't think this battle is directly related to 2D vs 3D as much as it is based on story. Aladdin and the Lion King were great and worked well in 2D. Robin Hood, Peter Pan and Pinocchio are classics and will continue to be. I couldn't imagine or even want to see those films in 3D. It has been years since Disney released a good 2D animation that I could consider being interested in.
Let the competition begin
The latest cutback came two weeks ago, after 13 traditional animators submitted five scenes they had done on computer to vie for six 3-D spots left to cast on Chicken Little.
Astoundingly, Schumacher thought Disney would be just fine if it killed off traditional animation. He noted that he received several e-mail messages complimenting him on Ice Age.
Management views its talent as a liability instead of an asset. When Schumacher found out that one of the top animators was unhappy, his first response was not "What can we do to make him happy?" His reaction was, "Why doesn't he just leave?"
Eisner has expressed interest in reanimating Disney's classic 2-D features in 3-D.
If Disney releases the traditional movies again in 3D, the classic feeling of Cinderella, Snow White etc will be lost. If production goes 100% 3D, don't rely on the success of past stories, instead write new ones.
